Perfection has one grave defect; it is apt to be dull.
– Somerset Maugham
I was contemplating a bottle of champagne to ring in the New Year, but I think I’ll settle for a cup of chai tea, resume a viewing marathon of the entire series of “24”, and work on my present knitting project, a ruffled scarf/shawl pattern worked in bamboo and metallic mohair yarns. Happy New Year!
The first fall of snow is not only an event, it is a magical event. You go to bed in one kind of a world and wake up in another quite different, and if this is not enchantment then where is it to be found?
J. B. Priestley
The year is winding down, and I haven’t posted my thoughts in over a month. When I stepped outside this morning, I knew I’d regret not writing at least a few lines to remember this particular moment in this month of December. I have opened my pages in the past few weeks only to stare dullishly at the blank screen. However, last night’s soft, sparkling snowfall revived a sense of cheer. My mate and I bundled into our winter gear while keeping the garage door closed; we were preparing to head to the barn for the horses’ morning feed. Upon completion of this daily ritualistic move, I heard, Ready? , in which I responded, Let’er rip. The door opened, and expecting to feel bitter blast of cold at daybreak, we were greeted with three inches of powder and a comforting stillness in the air. The only sounds heard were the horses’ nickers and a little dog across the way demanding to be let back into his house. I have known winter all my life, and it never ceases to be awe-inspiring.
Christmas is in several days. My family and I will enjoy the traditional roast and Yorkshire pud, along with the sweets that are part and parcel of the season. I am very appreciative of my loved ones; I am appreciative of the comforts that we have.
The morning’s rime instilled in me the desire to create culinary delights. I have a new stand mixer, an apparatus I always wanted but thought too pricey. I found a good deal on Amazon. The handsome stainless steel mixer sits on the counter and awaiting to be utilized. First recipe to be made will be a decadent chocolate bundt cake. What else is on my agenda?…knitting projects. If I drive into town today, it will be to take advantage of a 40% off coupon at one of my favorite craft stores.
Before signing off, I wish all good health, good fortune, and love this Christmas season and in the New Year.
